Trevor Linden has been my favourite hockey player for as long as I’ve loved hockey.

But Alex Burrows in recent years has slowly earned my respect and admiration. I like his tenacity, his attitude, and his ability to score hugely important goals.

His goal in game 7 of Vancouver’s first round series against Chicago last year stands out among the rest.

On Tuesday Burrows plays his 500th game in the NHL. This, from a player who probably never should have played in the league at all.

Here’s a cool story about my new favourite player.

Canadians who experience extreme pain can usually halt their agony with pain killers. That’s a reality that most of us take for granted, but in most parts of the world, it’s not an option.

Bureaucracy and the war on drugs are preventing those who need help the most from accessing highly effective narcotic pain killers, such as morphine. We traveled to India, Ukraine and Uganda to find out why.

Life in Pain is latest chapter of our work, broadcast on Global television, and available here.

The documentary report was shot and produced by a team of students, and teachers from the University of British Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism International Reporting Program (IRP). Peter W. Klein, an award-winning producer who is the director of the UBC School of Journalism and the IRP, led the project.

Check out this exceptional read in The Tyee by a friend of mine. It’s a peace of journalism that I’ve been familiar with for some time now, and I’m happy to see it unveiled for everyone to read.

It opens a telling window into life as a transgendered young person, and is a good reminder that our identity is ours to be exercised as we see fit. To hell with what anybody else thinks. The subjects, Amy and Gavin, are inspirational.

I’m looking forward to the other parts in the series.

It’s 6:30 in the morning. Dr. Paul Klimo gets out of bed and walks into the kitchen. He makes mango tea, which he sips while his English muffin browns in the toaster.

His wife wanders into the kitchen a little later. They chat, discussing their much-needed home renovations that keep getting put off.

At 8 a.m., Klimo makes the brief commute from his house in West Vancouver to Lions Gate Hospital, where he runs the chemotherapy clinic.

At the hospital, Klimo grabs an espresso from the coffee counter, and at 8:30 a.m., his staff in the oncology department huddle to plan their busy day. They’ll be seeing nearly 30 patients, some for consultations and some for treatment. After lunch, Klimo leaves the hospital and heads up the street to his office where he’ll spend the afternoon with another round of patients. All told, he will see as many as 45 people during his day.

This is Klimo’s routine. It’s been this way more or less since he came to the North Shore three decades ago.

He’ll trace these steps for the last time on Thursday, June 30, and then he’ll retire.

You may recall I wrote this news story for The Thunderbird last spring. But this time around I’m hoping to delve deeper into why there are so many people into this stuff, and more importantly, who is trying to prevent them from getting it.

If you drink raw milk, or know somebody who does, I’d love to hear from you. evan@evanduggan.com or tweet me.
